Anzelc: The Fight Continues
Governor Tim Pawlenty (R) yesterday vetoed the omnibus capital investment bill, which contained $30 million in support of the proposed Minnesota Steel Mill in Nashwauk. Representative Tom Anzelc (DFL-Balsam Township) called the Governor's decision very political and detrimental to a civil and respectful end to the 2007 session.
"I am disgusted with the Governor's decision to veto this bill," Anzelc said. "The Governor just vetoed 700 good paying jobs for Northern Minnesota and thousands of construction jobs for the Building Trades. Its clear that Governor Pawlenty is more concerned about politics than jobs."
Anzelc said the decision was especially disappointing given the recent news that Essar Global Limited plans to invest $1.6 billion in the project.
"This is just inexcusable," he said. "This project is the biggest economic development ever on the Western Mesabi. I just don't understand how he could be so shortsighted."
Anzelc was quick to point out, however, that the veto does not doom the Minnesota Steel project.
"I ask the citizens to remain calm and have faith and confidence that I, along with Senator Saxhaug and Representative Solberg, will do our best to restore the funding," he said.
