NOW THAT’S INNOVATION!
To The Editor,
Since my term in the State House began in January, I've noticed that politicians talk a lot about innovation and creative solutions to public policy problems. It's rare, however, that I see truly original strategies brought forth. That’s why I, along with many of my fellow Representatives, was so impressed with International Falls Mayor Shawn Mason's solution for physician recruitment for our hospital.
Mayor Mason, as you might have read in the Minneapolis Star Tribune, wrote a letter to radio host Garrison Keillor asking for help recruiting doctors. Mr. Keillor, in turn, wrote a song and performed it on his show. Now we have twenty applicants for four positions.
That kind of success is pretty uncommon in politics and Mayor Mason should be applauded for it. We are lucky to have her.
In fact, I'm beginning to think we should recruit Mayor Mason and Mr. Keillor to tackle health care reform down here at the Capitol. Just think of the creativity and problem solving approaches they could come up with!
