MN STEEL MILL PROJECT IN BONDING BILL

A proposal to build the Minnesota Steel Mill at a site near Nashwaak took a big step forward today when the House Capitol Investment Division included money for the project in its omnibus bonding bill. Rep. Tom Anzelc (DFL-Balsam Township) said he was very pleased that $20 million was included.
"My top priority is creating jobs in Northern Minnesota," he said. "We worked hard to get this proposal included in the bonding bill, and I am very happy to see that happen."
Anzelc was quick to note, however, that there is still more work to be done before the steel mill can be built. His original proposal called for $30 million in public money to pay for infrastructure around the mill. Anzelc said the bill was not yet a finished project and that he will continue to work to fully fund the infrastructure. The bill must still be passed by the full House and the Senate and be signed by the Governor before it becomes law.
"This is a work in progress," Anzelc said. "Just getting the proposal into the bill is a major victory."
Anzelc was also successful in his efforts to get funding for the Canisteo Mine Outflow Project included in the bill. The Canisteo Mine was operational for 78 years until it closed in 1985. Since that time, it has gradually filled with water and now threatens to overflow, potentially endangering the towns of Bovey, Coleraine and Taconite.
"Overall, this is a very good day for Northern Minnesota," Anzelc said. "This isn't a perfect bill, but it’s a good start to a very successful session for the people of Northern Minnesota."
