At a meeting of the Capitol Investment Finance Division today, Rep. Tom Anzelc (DFL-Balsam Township) promoted legislation providing $3.4 million for the Canisteo Mine Outflow Project. Anzelc told the committee that the project is critical to his district.
"The Canisteo Mine is a disaster waiting to happen," he said. "We are one normal winter snowfall and one normal spring runoff from a catastrophe. Something must be done before property owners pay the price for our lack of action."
The bill, which is also being sponsored by Rep. Loren Solberg (DFL-Grand Rapids), would provide money to build a siphoning system that would drain water from the Canisteo Mine into Trout Lake and from there into the Swan River and the Mississippi River System.
The Canisteo Mine opened in 1907 and operated for the next 78 years, growing to a size of 1,330 acres and reaching a depth of 300 feet. After the mine closed in 1985, it began to fill with water. With no natural outlet, water in the mine will spill out within three years if no action is taken. Such a spill would endanger the towns of Bovey, Coleraine and Taconite. Also running through the area that would be affected by a Canisteo Mine spill is a railroad line that will be key infrastructure for the proposed Minnesota Steel Mill project.
"The Minnesota Steel Mill project is one of the most exciting proposals for job creation in northern Minnesota," Anzelc said. "If the railroad route is jeopardized, it impacts the entire project. We can't allow that to happen."
During the committee meeting, several committee members voiced their support for the Canisteo project and the bill was set aside for possible inclusion in the omnibus bonding bill, which is expected to be passed later this session.
