To The Editor:
I was encouraged to read a letter from the Students for Expanding Education Funding in your paper last week. The students were spot on. Governor Pawlenty's education proposal would funnel money to districts already blessed with resources at the expense of needier districts particularly in rural areas. As the only representative from Northeastern Minnesota to sit on the K-12 Finance Division in the Minnesota House, I oppose the Governor's plan.
I believe we need to have an education financing system that is fair, balanced and provides needed relief to declining enrollment school districts. The quality of a child's education ought not to depend on where they are born; the children of Balsam Township are just as deserving of first-rate schools as the children of Bloomington.
In addition, our education system must make sure that every student has access to the electives, language courses, technology courses and advanced placement courses necessary to compete in a global market.
Finally, the state must meet its obligation to rural districts and provide adequate funding for transportation and special education.
Minnesota has a long and rich tradition if educational excellence. For generations, we have understood that our prosperity as a state is dependant on a highly skilled workforce. The Governor's proposal would abandon that tradition and take our state in the wrong direction. We can do better.
Regards,
Rep. Tom Anzelc
