Representative Tom Anzelc (DFL-Balsam Township) and Representative Loren Solberg (DFL-Grand Rapids) today introduced legislation that would provide over $30 million in support of the proposed Minnesota Steel Industries Taconite Mine, Pellet Plant and Steel Mill Project in Itasca County near the community of Nashwaak.
"This plant and mill will provide a huge boost to the economy of Northern Minnesota and will create over 700 jobs. The people of the Western Mesabi want this to happen," said Anzelc.
Solberg said that the proposal will provide a secure economic future for the region and also is in keeping with the history of the area.
"The new mill will bring good paying jobs and economic growth to our region, as well as a return to our rich tradition of mining," Solberg said. "This proposal will go a long way to curing a lot of the ills we are feeling in Itasca County and surrounding areas."
The money, which would be used to fund infrastructure for the project, would be financed by publicly issued state bonds. Anzelc said the money is justified because it is important for the state to play an active role in helping economic development in the northland.
"This definitely is a project of statewide significance," he said. "Our children shouldn't have to move to Minneapolis to find work. As legislators, it is our responsibility to make sure that good jobs are available in everywhere in our state."
Anzelc and Solberg said that they are optimistic about the bill's chances of passing now that the DFL is in the majority.
"Now we have leadership that is listening to the people of Northern Minnesota, so I expect action on this bill," said Anzelc.
