Audubon Minnesota Recognizes Rep. Rick Hansen’s Conservation Leadership

On Thursday, October 13 Audubon Minnesota will present an award for exemplary leadership in protecting bird habitat to Representative Rick Hansen at the St. Paul Audubon Chapter’s Members meeting at the Fairview Community Center in Roseville at 7:00 pm.

State Representative Hansen was the co-author of the National Audubon Society’s Centennial and the State Office’s 25th anniversary state senate resolution. The resolution commemorated Audubon’s 100 years of conservation excellence in the United States and 25 years in Minnesota. Representative Hansen has demonstrated considerable commitment to protecting wetlands, prairies and forests during his first legislative session of his first term in the State House, where he serves as a member of the House Committee on Environment and Natural Resources. Upon election to the State House, Hansen immediately took on a conservation leadership role by introducing legislation that would require the state to enforce the riparian setbacks on streams alongside agricultural fields, which provides bird and other wildlife with quality habitat. He took on a leadership role in committee and on the House floor on motorized recreation – supporting tougher enforcement measures and demonstrating willingness to take-on a difficult issue.

“Minnesota needs more legislators like Representative Rick Hansen," said Mark Peterson, Audubon Minnesota’s Executive Director. “For all of us who enjoy watching birds in our backyards or going to state parks and forests to birdwatch or hunt, we have Representative Hansen to thank. Without new conservation leadership in the House of Representatives, we risk losing everything that makes Minnesota unique and the things we value – clean water, forests, prairies and wetlands. Audubon appreciates Representative Hansen’s strong leadership in protecting both game and non-game birds and their habitat.”

Hansen has also co-authored legislation that improves water quality standards in the state, increases funding for wildlife management areas and evaluates conservation reserve easements.
