WWII Veterans Memorial Ground Breaking Ceremony at the Capitol August 14
Representative Rick Hansen is honored to invite veterans and their families to be special guests at the State Capitol on Sunday, August 14th from 12 to 5 p.m. to celebrate the ground breaking of the new World War II Veterans Memorial. The ground breaking ceremony is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. at the Court of Honor on the State Capitol Mall in downtown Saint Paul – directly across the mall from the front of the State Capitol Building. August 14th will also mark the 60th Anniversary of the first news of Japan's surrender at the end of WWII.
"I'm delighted that construction will finally begin on a monument to honor the over 300,000 Minnesotans who served in WWII, 79,000 of whom are still with us." Hansen commented. "I look forward to the monument's completion in the fall of 2006."
Visitors are invited to view design panels of the new memorial on display in the Capitol Rotunda, or take a walk along the Capitol Mall. Representatives from the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs and the designers of the memorial will be on hand to meet with visitors and present a behind the scenes look at the origin, design and symbolism of the memorial.
Also from noon to 5 p.m., the nearby Minnesota History Center (345 Kellogg Blvd. W.) will be hosting "Greatest Generation Day." Activities at this free event will include big band music and dance, an ice cream social, a B-25 fly-over, a classic car display, veteran speakers including Gen. John Vessey, a chance for visitors to ask the Society's collections team about their WWII treasures, church bells signaling the moment when Minnesotans first heard the news of the war's end, and a "peace crane" activity in which guests can make a senbazuru (folded paper crane) that the Society will send to St. Paul's sister city of Nagasaki, Japan, for International Peace Day on Sept. 15, 2005.
