Rep. Rick Hansen Votes for Disaster Relief for Dakota County

(ST. PAUL) — Today, the Minnesota Legislature voted to pass $180 million in disaster relief for the areas affected by flooding and windstorm damage earlier this summer. State Representative Rick Hansen (DFL – South St. Paul) voted for the disaster relief legislation. Dakota County was included in the initial disaster declaration by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and was included in the state disaster relief.

“I’m very pleased we were able to come together and do the right thing for the people of Minnesota who’ve had their lives turned upside down by this disaster,” said Rep. Hansen. “Duluth and Northern Minnesota certainly deserve most of the attention and funding, but it’s great that we were able to include Dakota County in the relief package as well.”

During the Special Session, Rep. Hansen confirmed that Dakota County would receive reimbursement of their expenses. The disaster relief bill also contains over $20 million in flood mitigation and soil & water conservation practices, designed to help prevent another disaster like this one in the future.

“Prevention is cheaper than clean-up,” said Rep. Hansen. “Smart investments in prevention practices can make recovery and clean-up easier for those dealing with disasters, and save us millions in taxpayer dollars later.”
