(ST. PAUL) – Today, the Omnibus Environment Policy Bill became law. State Representative Rick Hansen (DFL – South St. Paul) released the following statement:
“I am saddened today to learn the bill reducing wetland protection in Minnesota became law. Wetlands are essential for wildlife, water quality, and flood prevention.
“Minnesota has had a history of our requirements being more protective than the federal government because Minnesotans understand the value of wetlands. This bill was written by Republican legislators who do not share the environmental values of most Minnesotans.
“They included the rollback in a large omnibus bill negotiated in the middle of the night without public involvement. This will not be the last attempt to weaken wetland protections, but the first successful one."
