(ST. PAUL) – Today, the Minnesota House of Representatives rejected a $220 million bonding bill that funded only the restoration of the Minnesota State Capitol instead of important economic infrastructure projects throughout Minnesota.
State Representative Rick Hansen (DFL – South St. Paul) is a member of the Capital Investment Committee and voted against the bill. Rep. Hansen released the following statement:
“I have long been a supporter of restoring the Capitol and remain so now, but this bill isn’t the way to do it. Minnesota needs a comprehensive bonding bill that invests in the entire statewide infrastructure our businesses need to be successful. The Capitol restoration should be a part of that bill, but it doesn’t make sense to set aside $220 million in bonding when we can’t actually use that taxpayer money for years — especially when we have such a long list of important statewide and regional projects.
“Last year, the Republican majority attempted to force a bonding bill through without negotiating with DFLers, and it too was rejected. We eventually passed a more comprehensive and bipartisan bonding bill. My goal is to make that happen again now.
