Monday, March 5 marks the 125th birthday of the city of South Saint Paul.
South St. Paul was originally settled by a band of the Dakota — also known as the Kaposia — Native American tribe. In 1842 a post office was set up at Kaposia, a Methodist mission for the Native Americans near present South St. Paul. Years later, in 1886, the St. Paul Union Stockyards were built in the area now known as Concord and Grand, rapidly expanding the area.
On February 7, 1887, the first official city post office opened, establishing “South Park" as a separate village from West St. Paul. The renamed city of South St. Paul was approved by the state legislature on January 1, 1887.
You can make a difference in celebrating the 125th Anniversary. In addition to food drives taking place within the schools, the South St. Paul Mayor’s Youth Task Force will have a food drive from March 1 to March 25 to benefit Neighbors, Inc.. Donations will be accepted at Central Square, the Library, City Hall and various businesses.
I’ve had the incredible fortune to represent part of South St. Paul since my election to the Minnesota House in 2004. We’re fortunate to live in this great area and I thank you for all that you do to make our community what it is.
I was also proud to draft a House of Representatives resolution honoring South St. Paul and its residents on the 125th birthday of our wonderful community. Also, Governor Dayton will be joining us at the 125th Celebration on March 5 from 4 to 8 pm at City Hall. I look forward to seeing folks at the celebration, and here’s to another 125 years of South St. Paul!
