STATE REP. RICK HANSEN ATTENDS “REINVEST IN MINNESOTA” 25TH ANNIVERSARY EVENT

(SAINT PAUL) — Representative Rick Hansen (DFL – South St. Paul) participated and spoke at the 25th anniversary celebration of the Reinvest in Minnesota (RIM) Reserve Program on September 21, 2011. The RIM program has been a critical component of the state’s efforts to protect and restore wildlife habitat on private lands, and protect and improve our state’s water quality since 1986.

“The Reinvest in Minnesota Reserve Program works as the nation’s premier wetland restoration program," said Rep. Hansen. “This effective environmental program directly impacts Minnesotans in many positive ways — protecting our natural resources, preventing flooding and improving our water quality.”

Since the program began, the state has appropriated nearly $170 million for conservation easements and the Board of Water and Soil Resources (BWSR), along with local Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCD), has acquired over 6,400 easements totaling more than 230,000 acres. In addition, the RIM program has leveraged an additional $260 million from the US Department of Agriculture since 1998.

BWSR acquires, on behalf of the state, conservation easements to permanently protect, restore, and enhance critical natural resources without owning the land outright. The land remains in private ownership. BWSR provides statewide program coordination and administration while implementation at the local level is done by county SWCDs.

“It was my honor to speak at this great event for this great program,” Rep. Hansen said. “The RIM Reserve Program has worked for 25 years as an effective partnership and I look forward to another 25 years of Minnesota’s leadership in making this work. I will continue to work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to ensure that this program is properly funded, focused and managed going forward.”
