(ST. PAUL) – Today State Representative Rick Hansen (DFL – South St. Paul) called for the Lessard-Sams Outdoor Heritage Council to re-open their request for proposals and consider long-term projects to address the Asian Carp invasive species in next year's legislative appropriations for the Outdoor Heritage Fund.
Today the Minnesota DNR announced that environmental DNA testing suggested the presence of invasive silver carp in the St. Croix River.
“We have an annual recommendation process in the Outdoor Heritage Fund in order to respond to pressing needs," Rep. Hansen said. “Invasive species entering our lakes, rivers and streams would certainly qualify as a pressing need.”
The Legacy constitutional amendment that created the Outdoor Heritage Fund says the funds “may be spent only to restore, protect, and enhance wetlands, prairies, forests, and habitat for fish, game, and wildlife.”
“It would be prudent and appropriate for the Council to take a few weeks and seek additional proposals to address this pressing need, to not do so would be to choose process over protection of our natural resources,” Rep. Hansen said. “Minnesotans understand the severity of this issue and the damage these invasive species could cause to our beautiful waterways. They expect us to get the job done.”
