WE STILL HAVE MUCH TO BE THANKFUL FOR
To the Editor:
Nearly eighty years ago, at the height of the Great Depression, Franklin Roosevelt was sworn in as the 32nd President of the United States.
In 1933, 25 percent of Americans were out of work. Countless thousands had lost their homes, their farms, and their livelihoods. But Roosevelt addressed a desperate nation with optimism and courage. He said:
“Our distress comes from no failure of substance. We are stricken by no plague of locusts. Compared with the perils which our forefathers conquered, because they believed and were not afraid, we have still much to be thankful for."
Today, in these troubling economic times, many Minnesotans face the future with a sense of uncertainty. But the example set by our parents and grandparents eight decades ago gives me assurance that the spirit and will of the American people can overcome even the most pressing trials.
Most importantly, I believe in the people of this community, and our state. We are no stranger to challenge, and as in times past, I am confident that together we can overcome these challenging times and build a better Minnesota for ourselves and for our children.
In 1941 President Roosevelt signed a bill into law officially designating Thanksgiving as a national holiday. This Thanksgiving, I am proud to live in our community and thankful for our many friends and neighbors who make it the place that it is. I am deeply grateful that you have asked me to do the work of improving our economy. I am deeply committed to that work, and confident that Minnesota’s best days are ahead of us.
