A Holiday for Trees

On Wednesday the House of Representatives celebrated Arbor Day early. Representatives Loon, McNamara, Solberg and I distributed trees to members of the House for Arbor Day. This is an annual, bi-partisan tradition that I have participated in since being elected to the House. We alternate the trees species every year and highlight Minnesota Grown products. This year we distributed Black Hills Spruce, a native species which can be found throughout Northern Minnesota. On the last Friday of every April we recognize one of our greatest natural treasures-trees. This national holiday, known to everyone as Arbor Day, is a chance to appreciate the beauty and majesty of trees across the country. In Minnesota, we know a thing or two about these remarkable plants. From maple trees that shade parks in the Twin Cities to the sweeping pines you find in Northern Minnesota’s forests, trees play an important role in our landscape. They should be remembered as an integral part of our cultural heritage and a vital component for our state’s future. Without them our natural spaces would look completely different, and not in a good way. If we wish to keep our image as an outdoors state than we need to ensure that our forests and trees are allowed to prosper. So this Arbor Day take some time out to plant a small tree or relax underneath one. It will give you a chance to appreciate the growth, beauty, and comfort of this resource.
