ST. PAUL, MN – A Minnesota non-profit, The Organizing Apprenticeship Project, released its 2009 Minnesota Report Card on Racial Equality. State Rep. Rick Hansen was one of the legislators it labeled a champion for his efforts to advance racial equality during the 2009 legislative session.
“I’ve always believed that every Minnesotan deserves a fair shot at success," said Hansen. “As a legislator I have the opportunity to work toward that goal. I’m happy to see members of our legislature being recognized for their work toward equality.”
The organization advocates for racial equity in Minnesota. This is their fourth annual Report Card on the legislature. Its goal was to evaluate how well the Governor and Legislature advanced racial equity in laws passed in 2009. The report also detailed how much Governor Pawlenty’s unallotments impacted communities of color and low income families.
Every Representative and Senator received a grade from the organization. Hansen achieved high marks because he voted to approve most of the equity bills before the Legislature-on issues ranging from the budget to civil rights. He also was a co-author on a payday lending bill that greatly benefitted lower income families.
“This provides a good way to check in with our constituents,” said Hansen. “We came here to represent Minnesotans and reports like this let us know if we are doing our job or need to change.”
