Bonding Bill Would Provide Boost to Met Council Grant

St. Paul- State Rep. Rick Hansen’s (DFL- South St. Paul) call to include a special Met Council grant in the upcoming bonding bill has been answered. The grant offers the city of West St. Paul help paying for inflow and infiltration (I & I) sewer repair projects. Hansen is excited to see his bill included in the House Capital Investment Bill.

“The Met Council grant will not only help water quality in the area, but will also create capital investment," said Hansen. “The bonding bill is about giving shovel-ready projects the funds to hire Minnesotans ready to get back to work. I believe this grant will help achieve that goal.”

In January 2008, the Met Council approved $700,000 in grants for inflow and infiltration sewer repair projects. West St. Paul received about $400,000 of those funds. The grant was in response to a $205,000 fine St. Paul received from the Met Council for faulty sewer infrastructure. The city used the money to help residents identify and fix problems and paid for up to 50 percent of repair costs. Then in May of 2009 the money evaporated.

“Bonding bills help bolster infrastructure and provide jobs. By introducing a bonding bill early, the Legislature is showing that we are serious about that, especially in a recession,” said Hansen.

For Hansen’ bill to become law the House and Senate must pass the Capital Investment Bill and Governor Pawlenty has to sign off on it. The Capital Investment Bill is expected to reach the House floor for debate by February 15.
