BUILDING OUR RECOVERY, ONE BRICK AT A TIME

To the Editor:

Last week the City of South St. Paul officially opened a newly-constructed tunnel under 19th Avenue North along the North Urban Regional Trail. The tunnel, built to safely move bike and pedestrian traffic across this dangerous crossing, was funded in part by a bonding bill passed in 2008 by legislature. Without state bonds, this important project, and the jobs it created over the last year, would not have been possible.

Right now projects like these are exactly the kind of infrastructure investments Minnesota needs to be making. High-value projects with positive local impacts do more than enhance safety on our roads and trails - they are the building blocks of our economic recovery.

Minnesota’s State Economist Tom Stinson agrees. Over the course of the last year, Mr. Stinson has consistently advocated for targeted investments in high-value, shovel-ready infrastructure projects. These projects have far-reaching impacts that enhance our quality of life, put people to work, and leave lasting, valuable infrastructure in place for decades to come.

During the upcoming 2010 Legislative Session, the work of the Minnesota Legislature will be largely focused on smart bonding efforts. As a member of the Capital Investment Committee responsible for crafting this year’s bonding bill, I’ll be prioritizing shovel-ready infrastructure projects that put people to work quickly, and spur long-term economic growth.

This is a critical moment on Minnesota’s path to economic recovery. State lawmakers need to keep our eyes on the road, and make smart choices with limited resources. Minnesota’s economic future depends on it.
