STATE REP. RICK HANSEN APPOINTED TO SERVE ON OUTDOOR HERITAGE COUNCIL

ST. PAUL - Minnesota House Speaker Margaret Anderson Kelliher this week announced the appointment of Rep. Rick Hansen (DFL - South Saint Paul) to the Lessard Outdoor Heritage Council. The Council will recommend appropriations from the newly created Outdoor Heritage Fund approved by voters as an amendment to the Minnesota State Constitution.

“It’s an honor to be appointed to this position," said Rep. Hansen. “I look forward to playing a direct role in responsibly appropriating needed funding for environmental conservation efforts statewide.”

The twelve member council includes 8 public and 4 legislative members appointed by the Governor and Minnesota Senate as well as the Speaker of the House. The House received more than 120 applications for the citizen appointed positions.

“Minnesotans sent a clear message that they want to make wise investments in the outdoors,” said Speaker Kelliher (DFL-Minneapolis). “Members appointed to the council have articulated a vision to create an open and transparent process with outcomes that can easily be measured.”

Rep. Hansen has developed a strong reputation at the State Capitol for his leadership on oversight and accountability in government. As chair of the bipartisan Legislative Audit Commission, Rep. Hansen has played a direct role in ensuring taxpayers receive the best value for their dollar. Hansen’s oversight experience, combined with his long history of leadership and expertise on environmental conservation issues, made him an ideal candidate to serve on the Outdoor Heritage Council.

“I look forward to continuing the work we started so long ago to secure needed dedicated funding for the outdoors,” said Hansen, who co-authored legislation putting the constitutional amendment on the ballot this year. “The resources and attention our state’s natural resources deserve have been long overdue. As a member of the Outdoor Heritage Council, I pledge to do everything I can to make sound investments in effective conservation efforts, while ensuring the best, most responsible use of taxpayer resources.”

By law, the council will hold its first meeting December 1. It will advise the Legislature on how Outdoor Heritage Fund money should be spent on everything from wetland, prairie and forest restoration to fish, game and wildlife habitat. Local, regional, state and national organizations may apply for matching grants in an effort to encourage local conservation projects. The council will submit its recommendations to the Legislature by April 1, 2009.
