MINNEAPOLIS – Representative Rick Hansen (DFL – South St. Paul) has consistently advocated for the arts in the State Legislature. For his work on behalf of the arts in Minnesota, a statewide grassroots arts advocacy organization known as Minnesota Citizens for the Arts (MCA) recognized Hansen this week for his "tireless" efforts on behalf of the nonprofit arts in our state.
In the words of Larry Redmond, MCA's legislative advocate, "Rep. Hansen was selected to receive this award because of his outstanding leadership in bringing together conservation and culture advocates for the betterment of all Minnesotans."
MCA recognized Rep. Hansen particularly for his instrumental role in striking a compromise between conservation and arts groups over the long-debated constitutional amendment for arts and outdoors dedicated funding.
MCA describes its mission as one "to ensure [the] opportunity for all people to have access to and involvement in the arts." They did well in their joint efforts with legislators and the art community in the 2007 session, as it was a very successful year for the arts. Accomplishments for the arts last year included:
· Arts funding, formerly at $8.6 million per year, will be increased to $10.3 million per year for the next two years.
· Minnesota will have a Poet Laureate.
· The Percent for Art Program was restored.
· An agreement on a constitutional amendment to fund the outdoors and the arts was made.
"Minnesota has a rich artistic tradition that I consider an essential component of our past, present, and future," said Rep. Hansen. "Minnesota artists tell the story of who we are as a people. That's why I consider it an honor to receive this award and I am proud to be an advocate on behalf of the arts in Minnesota."
Rep. Hansen was presented with the award at the Minnesota Citizens for the Arts 2007 annual meeting at the Illusion Theater in Minneapolis earlier last week.
