LEGISLATURE ADDRESSES ASIAN CARP PROBLEM

To the Editor:

As Tuesday's article indicated, the presence of asian carp species in Minnesota waterways cannot be taken lightly. The recent discovery of yet another bighead carp in Lake Pepin is an indication of what will happen if the problem isn't corrected.

That's why the Minnesota Legislature enacted measures this year to mitigate current invasive species populations and prevent their proliferation.

These measures:
1. Require anyone who catches an asian carp in Minnesota to report it to the DNR within seven days.
2. Require the DNR to provide a report by Nov. 1, 2007, detailing plans to prevent the spread of asian carp in Minnesota.
3. Increase funding over the next two years to prevent the spread of all aquatic invasive species and manage terrestrial invasive species.

We in the legislature will continue working to ensure that the threat of invasive species is addressed to the fullest.
