Saying that we need more accountability in government, Representative Rick Hansen proposed a measure that would amend Minnesota's Constitution to make the Commissioner of the Department of Natural Resources an elected position. Currently the position is appointed by the Governor.
“Our environment and natural resources are too important for conservation, protection and economic development to be left to appointed people," Representative Hansen said. “Elected officials have to answer directly to the people of this state, so we can count on them to better represent our interests."
The measure was proposed as an amendment to HF 1909, authored by Representative Hackbarth, which dedicates a portion of the state sales tax to the DNR.
Representative Hansen said, "If we are going to amend the Constitution to dedicate taxes for conservation and clean water, then we need to allow the voters to choose the stewardship of those taxes and resources." Hansen said he plans to push at every opportunity to make the DNR Commissioner an elected position.
