To the Editor:
For the first time in eight years, the Legislature has finished its budget work on time, without the need for a special session. I worked with my colleagues to prepare a budget plan that focuses on the basics and lays the groundwork for future progress.
By focusing on the basics, restore funding for early childhood programs, increase access to health care, and make pursuing a higher education more affordable. We also passed historic energy reforms, essential environmental legislation, and resources for military servicemembers and veterans.
Amid these accomplishments, it was disappointing that $543 million in property tax relief was vetoed this year, as was our historic transportation investment package. These fiscally responsible plans would have benefited all Minnesotans. Disappointment aside, I will continue working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to secure permanent property tax relief, fix our roads and bridges, and invest in important transit infrastructure like the Robert Street Corridor.
It has been an honor representing our community this session. The legislative session has adjourned until February 12, 2008. However, I am committed to remaining available to you throughout the interim.
