REP. HANSEN RECOGNIZED FOR EFFORTS TO ALLEVIATE HUNGER IN MINNESOTA

ST. PAUL – Newell Searle, Vice President for External Relations at Second Harvest Heartland, recently awarded Rep. Rick Hansen (DFL – South St. Paul) with a certificate of appreciation for his leadership in helping local food shelves provide food for hungry Minnesotans. This recognition came after Rep. Hansen authored and passed a bill this session that provides funds to process donated venison from Minnesota hunters for local food shelves.

Mr. Searle expressed his appreciation for Hansen's leadership stating, "This is a program that will provide a significant volume of fresh meat to people in Minnesota who are unable to provide food for themselves."

He went on to comment on how this initiative will also help with an overpopulation of deer in Minnesota, "At the same time this program will maintain the health and vitality of those in our state who are hungry and rely on food shelves for meals, it will also maintain the health and vitality of Minnesota's deer population."

This new initiative is expected to produce upwards of 6,000 donated deer from Minnesota hunters annually – providing a significant amount of food to be distributed to the state's hungry population. Rep. Hansen considers this a step in the right direction from a conservation standpoint as well as a good thing hunters can do for those less fortunate in our state.

"I am glad to have had the opportunity to successfully carry this bill through the legislative process this session," said Hansen. "It will do a lot of good for a lot of hungry Minnesotans while working to rectify the overpopulation of deer in our state."
