LOCAL SCIENCE SCHOLAR SPENDS DAY WITH REP. HANSEN AT THE CAPITOL

ST. PAUL – Sean Ewen of Mendota Heights, a junior at St. Thomas University in St. Paul majoring in biology, recently received the Center for Applied Mathematics Outstanding Research Award for his project entitled "Dynamics of Potassium Channels in the Action Potential." His work was then displayed at a poster session last month where he was given the opportunity to display his work at the State Capitol for elected officials.

"I had an excellent time at the Capitol," said Ewen. "It was great to have the opportunity to share my work with lawmakers and learn more about the legislative process. It was even better than I expected."

Ewen and his faculty advisor, Dr. Mikhail Shzartsman, spent the day at the State Capitol discussing his work with elected officials, members of the public, and other college students. Ewen spent much of the day with his local legislator, Rep. Rick Hansen. Hansen gave Ewen and Dr. Shzarstman a tour of the Capitol, invited them to sit in on several meetings concerning environmental issues, and discussed Ewan's award-winning work.

"Mr. Ewen is a bright student with a lot of potential," said Rep. Hansen. "We need intelligent and dedicated Minnesotans like him working in the sciences and other fields to discover new technologies, explore new theories of science, and keep our state on the cutting edge of new and innovative industries."

Rep. Hansen also stated that Mr. Ewen is a good example of why Minnesota needs to make a strong investment in education.

"By providing fair funding for Minnesota's schools and higher education institutions, we can give Minnesota students the tools to learn and succeed in an increasingly competitive world," said Hansen. "In doing so, successful students like Sean will not be the exception, but rather the trend here in Minnesota."

Ewen will be presenting his work again this spring at a different conference. He will also be applying for medical school in the fall. In the meantime, inspired by his trip to the Capitol in February, Ewen plans to return this week with a group of his classmates and fellow college students from other academic institutions around the state to advocate for higher education funding. In doing so, he hopes to help in the effort to make a college education more affordable for all Minnesotans.
