ST. PAUL – Rep. Rick Hansen is now serving his second term as State Representative in the Minnesota Legislature. As a legislator, Hansen has come to understand the unique value of experiential learning in the legislative process by being directly involved in the business of the state at the Capitol.
"Over the last two years I have made efforts to involve as many people from my district as possible in the legislative process through student tours, constituent days at the Capitol, email updates, and more, said Hansen. "I wish that every Minnesotan could have the opportunity to learn, as I have, the great character and productivity of the people and process that make this state such a great place to live."
While not every Minnesotan can play a direct role in the legislative process, Rep. Rick Hansen has made an intentional effort to extend a unique learning opportunity to several college students from his district. Hansen has three interns working for him this session. This semester these students will undertake a wide variety of duties essential to the legislative process that are designed to provide them with a valuable educational experience.
"The internship program allows these students to expand the base of knowledge they have acquired in the classroom and put it into action here in the Legislature," said Hansen.
Amy Nord of Mendota Heights, Matt Husberg of West St. Paul, and Reid Anders of South St. Paul recently began their internships with Rep. Hansen. Their specific duties include constituent research and outreach, environmental research on wetlands and watersheds, direct shadowing of committee work, and more.
"This internship is helping me acquire a deeper understanding of how bills are passed and laws are enacted," said intern Matt Husberg. "It is a great learning opportunity and an honor to help Rep. Hansen serve our community and this state."
When session ends in May these interns will have learned a great deal about the legislative process, having lent their skills, talent, and interest to the important work of the Legislature.
"Matt, Amy, and Reid have been very helpful," said Rep. Hansen. "I hope that they, and future interns, will consider this experience a great asset to their education and an inspiration to further pursue a life of public service."
