REP. RICK HANSEN NAMED CHAIR OF SUBCOMMITEE ON WETLANDS, WATERSHEDS, AND BUFFER PROTECTION

ST. PAUL – State Representative Rick Hansen (DFL – South St. Paul) was named Chair of the Subcommittee on Wetlands, Watersheds, and Buffer Protection today. This subcommittee will be part of the Environment and Natural Resources Finance Division. It will review the Board of Water & Soil Resources budget and consider reform recommendations from the Office of the Legislative Auditor on efforts to protect Minnesota's lakes, streams, and water supply.

"I have dedicated much of my life to conservation efforts," said Hansen. "I am excited to use this new role as another avenue of progress for the protection of our environment."

Hansen has led a long career in working to protect the environment and brings valuable experience to this new post. Hansen received Master's Degree in Soil Management from Iowa State University and then went on to work for the Minnesota Department of Agriculture from 1988 – 2005. During that time he was elected to the Dakota County Soil and Water Conservation District where he served from 1997 – 2005. In this role he worked in coordination with state and national agriculture, soil, and water committees across the country to develop solutions to common environmental concerns.

Hansen was raised on a farm in Freeborn County, and owns a farm in Fillmore County where he hunts deer and turkeys. He is an avid canoer and outdoor enthusiast. His broad understanding of environmental issues facing all regions of the state as a farmer, hunter, outdoor enthusiast, and conservationist will serve him well in this position.

"My academic background, career, and experience with local, state, and federal conservation efforts has provided me the unique capability of leading this important and challenging task," said Hansen.

Speaker of the House, Margaret Anderson-Kelliher and Rep. Jean Wagenius – Chair of the Environment and Natural Resources Finance Division – are also confident in Rep. Hansen's ability to lead this effort effectively.

"Rick is the right person for the job," said Kelliher. "His expertise and passion for the environment have led him to be an outstanding advocate for conservation in his community, this state, and the nation at large."

Rep. Wagenius voiced her support for Hansen's appointment in saying, "This important work requires somebody who fully understands the issues at hand. I am glad we can count on Representative Hansen's informed and genuine leadership in this effort."

Under Hansen's leadership, the Subcommittee on Wetlands, Watersheds, and Buffer Protection will now begin working to evaluate the Legislative Auditor's findings and recommendations and implement changes in policy and budget.
