To the Editor:
When Governor Pawlenty delivered his State of the State address on January 17, I was pleased to hear that he and I share the same goal of establishing a new renewable energy standard for our state. His statements on Wednesday voicing his support for this initiative further solidified my high hopes for achieving positive and lasting progress for energy reform this session.
But there is much more to be done. It is my hope that this partnership, and further strides for bipartisan cooperation with my legislative colleagues in the House and Senate, will provide further avenues of progress for exploring new energy initiatives, efforts to protect our environment, and more this session.
First, our efforts must be focused on the Renewable Energy bill introduced in the opening week of session. This bill will require utilities to produce at least 25 percent of their total energy from new, renewable sources by the year 2020. This will not only set us on the cutting edge of renewable energy reform and protect our environment from harmful carbon emissions and global warming, but it can also produce jobs and investment in Minnesota industries.
I am a strong advocate for this bill, our environment, and the economic future of this state. I will be doing all I can in the coming months to ensure that this bill is passed. I welcome the Governor's partnership in this effort, as well as the partnership of my legislative colleagues, and the constituents in my district. Together we can achieve a better system of energy alternatives than our current situation.
