High School Page Program Offers Opportunity to Learn About Government First-Hand
State Representative Rick Hansen invites local high school students to experience the legislature in action as part of the House of Representatives High School Page Program. This program allows high school juniors to spend a week at the Capitol in St. Paul meeting with state representatives and assisting members during legislative session.
"This is the best civics lesson I can imagine," Rep. Hansen said. "High school pages are right there with us on the House floor. They get a unique front-row view of the lawmaking process."
Students selected for the program will meet individually with House members and discuss issues that matter to them, assist members during session, and participate in mock committee debates to inspire them to think critically about the issues facing our state. Students will also have an opportunity to meet with constitutional officers, members of the judiciary, lobbyists and members of the media. The Minnesota House of Representatives High School Page Program, now in its 32nd year, is one of only three in the country, modeled after a similar program in the United States Congress.
Minnesota high school students in their junior year are encouraged to submit an application by November 15, 2006, and if admitted, will be assigned to participate for one week between January and May 2007 with other students from across the state.
