Rep. Rick Hansen joined over 60 members of the Minnesota Legislature from both parties recently at the Humphrey Institute of the University of Minnesota for a two-day conference to explore ways to make the legislative process less partisan and divided.
"I do not want to see a repeat of last year's gridlock," Hansen said. "Citizens expect us to work together and find common ground on the challenges facing the state. I attended this conference because I want to do everything I can to make that happen."
Legislators of both parties from the House and the Senate came together to discuss ways to reach across the aisle and improve the legislative process. Five areas were identified that need improvement, including:
· Sharing power between caucuses and members
· Building social relationships and fairness
· Changing the budget structure
· Education and training of legislators and for the public
· Campaign reforms
"The conference allowed us to sit down, Republicans and Democrats, representatives and senators, to discuss ways to change the divisive partisan tone at the Capitol," explained Hansen. "We will follow up with another meeting in March. I am optimistic that this process will bring about positive changes."
