(ST. PAUL) — Today, Governor Dayton announced the projects that will receive a portion of the $47.5 million in DEED bonding funding. This bonding money was delegated to the executive branch by the legislature in the 2012 bonding bill. The Southwest Corridor Light Rail Transit project was awarded $2 million.
Rep. Steve Simon (DFL – St. Louis Park) released the following statement.
“Today's announcement is an incredibly generous show of support for our popular light rail system. I’d like to thank Governor Dayton for understanding the importance of transit to economic development and growth in the metro area. His strong support for the project adds to the ongoing support of our local businesses and communities. It’s important that we keep moving the project forward.
“This money allows us to leverage more federal dollars for the project. Every dollar in state money can get us five dollars from the federal government. In fact, thanks to the local counties the state will need to cover just 10 percent of the project. This is a smart investment in the future of the west metro and is an opportunity we should not pass up. This funding is a signal to the legislature that it’s time to make this project — and transit in general — a much higher priority."
