SIMON CALLS FOR BUDGET SOLUTIONS, NOT DISTRACTIONS

(ST. PAUL) – In response to today’s announcement regarding a proposal to add an amendment to the Minnesota Constitution requiring a photo ID at the polls, State Representative Steve Simon (DFL-St. Louis Park) released the following statement:

“The press conference today should have been about an actual budget offer from legislative leaders. Yesterday’s $34 billion proposal was a compromise of exactly zero dollars from the $34 billion budget they passed in May. I have heard from many Minnesotans the past few weeks who are tired of the distractions and game playing in St. Paul.

“I remain committed to meaningful campaign and election reform. I advocated this session for actual campaign and election integrity, providing sunshine into the political process. This voter ID proposal addresses a tiny problem by imposing a huge pricetag. Minnesota seniors are concerned this ill-advised policy will prevent them from voting, like they have for decades. We have to pay attention to make sure we don’t fence out honest, eligible voters. Today’s announcement appears to be an end run around the Governor. I encourage photo ID supporters to try again next year using the traditional legislative process, just like every other policy issue. We shouldn't use the constitution to settle scores or avenge losses in the legislative arena, which is where this belongs."
