County and city officials both have proposals in need of funding in 2006. Mower County would like permission to seek revenue through a local option sales tax for a new jail and justice center. The city of Austin may like to see a sales tax used for a Main Street flood mitigation project. The value of these projects is not in question, but how to pay for them is.
State Representative Jeanne Poppe is inviting the public to join her to discuss these two proposals on Thursday, December 8, at 6:30 p.m. at the Jay C. Hormel Nature Center Ruby Rupner Auditorium. Poppe will be joined by Senator Dan Sparks from Austin and Representative Dan Dorman from Albert Lea.
In the last legislative session, the Mower County sales tax proposal received little legislative support and was not approved. County officials have plans to try again in the upcoming session, which begins on March 1, 2006. As it stands now, city officials are considering offering their own sales tax proposal for their project. According to Poppe, success on both fronts will be difficult.
"Considering the lack of support for many local option sales tax proposals by the legislature in the last session, I think we could be facing an uphill climb," said Poppe.
City and county officials will be presenting information and answering questions from the public at the meeting. Poppe is hoping that by bringing area residents together for an open discussion, a consensus can be reached on what the local priorities are and how best to fund them.
"There are strong feelings for both projects," said Poppe. "While I know it won't be easy, our best chance of achieving success at the State Legislature is to present a united front."
