(ST. PAUL) State Representative Jeanne Poppe (DFL Austin) is pleased to announce that the application process for the Minnesota House of Representatives High School Page Program is now underway. The Page Program is open to juniors in public or private high schools. Accepted applicants will spend a week at the State Capitol in St. Paul and participate in a wide variety of experiences, designed to provide them with a deep understanding of Minnesota state government.
There are very few programs for students that provide a more meaningful opportunity to see how state government functions and gain some great experience; the House Page Program is certainly one of them, said Rep. Poppe. I wholeheartedly encourage students to apply for this excellent opportunity.
Highlights included in each student's week at the Capitol are individual meetings with legislators designed to allow students to discuss the issues that matter most to them, experiencing the legislative process firsthand by assisting members during legislative session, participating in a mock committee session designed to develop students' leadership skills and to inspire them to think critically about the issues confronting our state, and providing students with the opportunity to meet with constitutional officers, members of the judiciary, lobbyists, and members of the media. Students should expect to participate in scheduled program activities from 8:00 am to 5:30 pm Monday through Thursday, and from 8:00 am to noon on Friday.
High school students interested in applying should visit the House Page Program website at http://www.house.leg.state.mn.us/edprog/introletter.asp for more information and application materials. Program participants will receive a small stipend to help defray costs.
The application deadline is November 19.
If students have any additional questions, they can also contact Rep. Poppe at (651) 296- 4193, or via e-mail at rep.jeanne.poppe@house.mn.
