Poppe applauds $13.5 million for Hormel Institute expansion in House bonding bill

(ST. PAUL, MN) – Today, State Representative Jeanne Poppe (DFL-Austin) voted in support of a statewide bonding package that invests $496 million into Minnesota’s aging infrastructure and creates thousands of construction and long-term private sector jobs. The bill passed the House of Representatives on a bipartisan vote of 99 to 32. Throughout the legislative session, Rep. Poppe advocated for a bonding package that fully funded the Hormel Institute expansion project.

"The city of Austin is home to a University of Minnesota research center, known as the Hormel Institute. This particular research facility has existed for 70 years and is recognized as a world renowned scientific research institute. The cancer research done there is groundbreaking and very well received. The scientists employed at the Institute have a high percentage of approval in grant funding and publication in scientific journals," stated Rep. Poppe.

The project is to build a $27 million International Center of Research Technology, with half of the funding coming from the State of Minnesota in this bonding bill. Collaborative partners with the Hormel Institute and the city of Austin include: the U of M, IBM, UM-Rochester and Mayo Clinic. This particular project is expected to add 120 strong paying jobs.

"The International Center of Research Technology is very important not only for the city of Austin and southern Minnesota but to the entire state. It creates jobs but more importantly since cancer prevention and research is the scientists' focus, we all win with this project," said Poppe.

“Other bonding for flood prevention and mitigation, local roads and bridges, wastewater systems, buildings on college campuses, and Greater Minnesota business development grants will benefit our region as well. The bonding bill passed today takes a big step forward in improving our infrastructure and in the process creates thousands of construction and permanent jobs vital to the state’s economic recovery,” concluded Rep. Poppe.
