St. Paul, Mn – Governor Tim Pawlenty has called the Minnesota State Legislature back into special session, beginning "one minute after the regular session adjourns". The end of the regular 2005 Legislative session is 12 midnight Monday.
"With bipartisan effort and support, we passed a strong state bonding bill, a minimum wage increase and an ethanol bill," said Rep. Jeanne Poppe (DFL-Austin). "With major issues such as education and health care remaining, it is important that we continue to work in a bipartisan way to finish our work."
According to Poppe, the spending amounts between the House and the Senate bill are not that far apart, the differences lie in who will pay for them.
"I am optimistic that with a commitment to finishing the job, we will arrive at a balanced, moderate approach to our state budget," said Poppe.
"As a new member of the House of Representatives, I am keenly aware of the message from voters in the last election to address the needs of Minnesotans, " said Poppe. "In this special session, we need to work together to adequately fund education, health care and transportation."
"There are three bodies in our state government," added Poppe. "The spirit of compromise is a reasonable expectation from all three."
