LOCAL INITIATIVES INCLUDED IN FINAL CAPITAL INVESTMENT BILL

St. Paul, MN – The Minnesota House of Representatives passed a Capital Investment Conference Committee report on Wednesday, putting in place provisions that focus on job creation, flood and disaster relief and economic recovery. The bill appropriates just under $300 million on statewide projects designed to put people to work quickly and fully utilize federal stimulus and matching dollars.
Riverland Community College received $1.25 million to replace a section of roof, windows and doors. These provisions were part of the $40 million appropriated for Minnesota State Colleges and Universities asset preservation.
“Bonding to maintain and improve state-owned assets is a responsible use of state dollars," said Poppe. “In addition to making necessary improvements to the Riverland campus, this appropriation will also create local jobs.”
In response to the serious flooding in Minnesota this spring, and fires and other natural disasters, this year’s bonding bill includes significant funding for disaster relief, including almost $54 million for flood mitigation and recovery. Austin is on the state agency list as one of the cities that can expect to share in these dollars.
“The residents of Austin are well aware of the ravaging effects floods can have on a community and how long it takes to fully recover,” said Poppe. “This is a good use of state bonding dollars.”
The bill also includes $55 million for transportation projects, including local bridge replacement and repair. In addition, hundreds of millions of federal dollars are leveraged in this bill, mostly in transportation projects.
The Capital Investment bill passed in the Senate later on Wednesday and is on its way to the Governor’s desk.
