St. Paul, MN – Funding to help rebuild critical wetlands in areas devastated by flooding was included in the Capital Investment bill signed into law by the Governor on Monday. Cedar River/Turtle Creek watersheds will receive $2 million as part of the Reinvest in Minnesota (RIM) funding package.
State Rep. Jeanne Poppe (DFL-Austin) said the money will help fund projects necessary to prevent floodwater from entering Austin. Additional RIM funds are dedicated to wetland restoration efforts throughout Minnesota.
The RIM program partners with the federal government's Wetland Reserve Program (WRP), providing essential conservation resources for Minnesota's wetlands.
"Currently, 40 percent of Minnesota's water resources are considered 'impaired' and hundreds more face serious contamination and quality issues every year," said Poppe. "Demand for efforts to restore and protect wetlands is at an all-time high. By leveraging federal dollars through this proven partnership, our state is able to complete essential capital projects while at the same time offering long-term environmental and economic benefits."
