St. Paul, MN - Representative Jeanne Poppe (DFL-Austin) cast a vote in favor of increased spending on education today when she voted in favor of the Dorman/Greiling Amendment.
The bipartisan amendment, proposed on March 18 by Rep. Dan Dorman (R-Albert Lea) and Rep. Mindy Greiling (DFL-Roseville), would have increased the maximum limit on general fund expenditures by $358 million and directed those funds to the K-12 education budget.
"It's time to stand up for our schools in Minnesota," said Poppe. "The message I heard throughout my campaign and since I've been in office is that we need to do a better job of funding public education."
Poppe added that even though this amendment can't make up for the cuts and lack of funding in the past, it would have added money now that supports public schools.
The amendment failed by a vote of 72 to 61, with two Republicans crossing the aisle to support education.
"I voted for the Dorman/Greiling Amendment in support of a bipartisan effort to increase funding for schools," said Poppe. "If we had received the Republican votes that were first indicated, extra funding for education would be in place."
In another vote cast on Tuesday, Poppe voted against the House Budget Resolution, calling it "bare bones" when it comes to funding education, health care and public services.
The Resolution (HR6) passed by a vote of 67-66, mostly along party lines. It sets the maximum limit of expenditures from the general fund for the House at $29.8 billion. It also specifies a minimum requirement for funds in the state's cash flow account ($350 million) and budget reserve ($653 million).
"This budget is unacceptable," said Poppe. "The House Majority and the Governor are severely underfunding our core Minnesota values."
Poppe also voted against the budget resolution proposal because it included the largest property tax increase in history, totaling $441 million. "This bill continues the trend of passing the burden to property owners," said Poppe. "We need to work together to find a better way."
