State Representative Jeanne Poppe is encouraging local high school students to experience the legislature in action as part of the House of Representatives High School Page Program. This program allows high school juniors to spend a week at the Capitol in St. Paul, where they will have the opportunity to meet with state representatives, constitutional officers, members of the judiciary and lobbyists. They will also assist members during the legislative session and participate in a mock committee session designed to help their leadership skills and inspire them to think critically about the issues facing our state.
The Minnesota House of Representatives High School Page Program, now in its 33rd year, is one of only three in the country, modeled after a similar program in the United States Congress.
"This is the best civics lesson I can imagine," Rep. Poppe said. "High school pages are right there with us on the House floor, where they get a unique front-row view of the lawmaking process."
Minnesota high school students in their junior year are encouraged to submit an application by November 16, 2007, and if admitted, will be assigned to participate for one week between February and May 2008 with other students from across the state. If you have questions or are interested in receiving an application, contact Rep. Poppe at 1-888-682-3180 or 1-651-296-4193, by mail at 487 State Office Building, 100 Martin Luther King Blvd., St. Paul, MN 55155 or via e-mail at rep.jeanne.poppe@house.mn.
