ST. PAUL – Legislation authored by State Rep. Jeanne Poppe (DFL-Austin) was signed into law by Governor Pawlenty on May 1st, the same day he received the bill. The new law requires the Department of Labor to notify health care and insurance providers, as well as employees and employers, that federal employees, for example, railroad workers, are excluded from Minnesota State Workers Compensation coverage.
"This is really a privacy issue for federal employees," said Poppe. "Under the current law, their private information, including medical data, is being released under the assumption that they qualify for worker's compensation.
I'm very pleased the Governor acted so swiftly to help protect the privacy rights of federal workers."
