HOUSE TAX BILL BENEFITS HORMEL INSTITUTE

ST. PAUL – Legislation authored by State Rep. Jeanne Poppe (DFL-Austin) on behalf of the Hormel Institute in Austin was included in the House Omnibus Tax Bill passed last week. The Institute is seeking a tax exemption for building materials, supplies and equipment used for their expansion, The benefit of this exemption is approximately $320 thousand.
"I'm very pleased my colleagues in the House agreed there are compelling reasons to approve this tax exemption," said Poppe. "The scientific value of the cancer research being done, the private donations which are supporting the research, and the tremendous economic impact this overall project has for our region and our state all make this worthwhile legislation."
When the bill was first heard in the Bio-Science and Emerging Technologies Committee, several individuals from the Hormel Institute and the city of Austin testified on behalf of the proposal. They included Hormel Institute representatives Dr. Zigang Dong, Professor and Executive Director, Gail Dennison, Marketing Director, and John Gray from the Hormel Foundation. In addition, Tom Dankert, City Finance Director, and Kathy Green, School Board Chair and member of the Hormel Institute fundraising committee, testified before the committee.
After unanimous passage in the Bio-Science Committee, the bill moved to the House Tax Committee, where, in addition to Gail Dennison from the Institute, Steve Rizzi from the Hormel Foundation Institute and Jim Hurm from the city of Austin testified.
"I would like to thank all of the individuals who came to St. Paul in support of this bill," said Poppe. "It is crucial that the state continue to strategically invest in the bioscience industry, both to support our economy and to ensure Minnesota remains a leader in this emerging technology."
The House bill will now move to Conference Committee, where the differences with the Senate Tax bill will be reconciled, before it is sent to the Governor.
