HOUSE EDUCATION BILL PROVIDES STUDENTS WITH RESOURCES TO SUCCEED

ST. PAUL – State Representative Jeanne Poppe said Wednesday's 119-13 passage of the House E-12 Education Finance bill will provide schools and students the resources they need to succeed.
"It's one thing to set high standards and another to provide the resources to meet those standards," Poppe said. "This bill does both."
The legislation's centerpiece is a 3% increase in the statewide per pupil funding formula both this year and next year. Schools will also see significant increases for special education and technology investments, along with state funding for voluntary All-Day Kindergarten. Local school districts would get the following total funding increases over the next two years:
· 8.6% for Austin
· 8.1% for Grand Meadow
· 7.7% for Leroy-Ostrander
· 8.2% for Kingsland

Rep. Poppe said she is also very pleased with the $125 million for significant property tax relief through levy buy downs.
"Over the last few years, schools have had to rely more and more on property taxes for funding," said Poppe. "This bill renews the state's commitment to our students, parents, and teachers."
The bill also includes significant reform and accountability proposals including an independent Office of Educational Accountability, Minnesota Teacher Development, and expanded career and advanced placement opportunities in high schools.
In an effort to make work with the Senate easier, the legislation includes components of the Early Childhood bill, including funding for ECFE, Head Start and School Readiness.
"Minnesota has long been a leader when it comes to educating our children, " said Poppe. "This bill helps restore that tradition, and offers a good education to every student in the state."
