Representative Jeanne Poppe (DFL-Austin) was pleased to learn today that her request for the use of a local option sales tax for the city of Austin was included in the House Omnibus Tax Bill.
"Although I have not reviewed the entire bill, it is gratifying to learn the Tax Committee considered the Austin request to have merit," said Poppe. "This option adds another piece of the puzzle to help remedy decades of flooding problems for the city of Austin."
Poppe is also seeking flood mitigation money in the Capital Investment Bill, which is being considered by the Bonding Conference Committee this week. She is optimistic that project will be approved, also, bringing at least $3 million into Austin for flood mitigation projects.
If the local option sales tax is approved during the 2006 Legislative session, it will be voted on by Austin residents before January 1, 2007. If it receives local voter approval, revenue from the sales tax would be used to contain the flood waters coming through the city.
"With our proposal included in both the Senate and the House tax bill, we're definitely in play," said Poppe. "This makes our position much stronger as we go into Conference Committee."
