Rep. Jeanne Poppe (DFL-Austin) commended the House for its bipartisan support of the bonding bill that passed on Tuesday.
"It is good to see that the legislators have heard the voters message to get things done," said Poppe. "The passing of this bill is a clear indication that we are moving forward."
The House's $817 million capital improvements bill was approved 121 to 12 on Tuesday, mirroring Gov. Tim Pawlenty's $816 million plan. The Senate's proposal is for $1 billion. Some of the components of the bill include $244 million for the University of Minnesota and state colleges, $118 million for environmental projects, $106 million for prisons, $115 million for jobs and economic development and $68.5 million for local roads and bridges.
Almost $11 million in projects are included for District 27B. A total of $4 million is included for flood hazard mitigation and flood relief, with money going to Austin, Albert Lea, Freeborn County and Blooming Prairie. The Riverland Community College Science lab will receive $5.1 million and the Shooting Star Trail is designated for $450,000.
In addition to the benefit of moving these projects forward, the bonding bill is expected to create about 10,000 jobs in the state. "The passage of this bill will give us a much needed boost," said Poppe. "This is just what we need to get our economy moving."
The bill now passes to the Conference Committee, where differences between the House bill and the Senate bill will be worked out. A final vote in each body sends the bill to the Governor.
