Peppin Encourages Young Women to Enter $3,000 Scholarship Essay Contest

ST. PAUL--- The National Foundation for Women Legislators and the National Rifle Association are co-sponsoring their eighth annual Bill of Rights Essay Contest for college-bound female high school juniors and seniors, which this year will be entitled "Champions of Liberty." The contest’s seven winners will each receive a $3,000 college scholarship and an all-expenses-paid trip to NFWL’s Annual Conference in August, where they will network with, be mentored by and speak to hundreds of women lawmakers from across the United States.

"This is an excellent opportunity for local members of the Class of 2005 and 2006," said State Representative Joyce Peppin, R-Rogers. "This contest will help seven young women demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of current issues and the U.S. Constitution, develop their leadership skills and to pay for college."

"James Madison, George Mason, and dozens of American leaders since their day have ensured Americans are protected by the Bill of Rights," said Peppin. "By sharing with women lawmakers across America the stories and legacies of these champions of liberty, young women can have a real impact. This essay contest is an opportunity for young women to win a college scholarship while making their voices heard on the meaning of the Bill of Rights."

The essay must be postmarked by Monday, June 13, 2005, and received by NFWL no later than Friday, June 17, 2005, after which an NFWL selection committee will judge each essay and determine the seven winners. The judges will primarily weigh the factors of storytelling, understanding of the Bill of Rights, and original insight.

The National Foundation for Women Legislators (NFWL)provides women Members of Congress and state legislators, county commissioners, and city councilors with strategic resources, including debates and briefings on the issues, leadership skill development, and opportunities for networking.

Questions by potential applicants may be directed to the NFWL office at 202-293-3040 ext. 1006 or scholarships@womenlegislators.org. More information can be found at: www.womenlegislators.org.
