ST. PAUL—A bill introduced by State Representative Joyce Peppin (R – Rogers) to allow Dayton to manage the historic village under shoreland regulations passed the House Environment and Oversight Committee on Tuesday, March 9. The bill amends current state rules to allow for development in the historic village of Dayton, as well as rebuilding in the event of flooding or other damage.
“When the current rule was instituted years ago, government officials either did not foresee the desire for further development along the riverfront or simply overlooked the city,” said Peppin.
“Both Mayor Anderson and the Department of Natural Resources were helpful in bringing attention to this issue. The rule change will enable the city to develop the historic village and rebuild if the need arises, while continuing to protect and preserve the historic riverfront we all value,” commented Peppin.
HF 2878 will next be heard by the full legislature on the floor of the Minnesota House. The bill is awaiting a hearing in the Minnesota Senate.
