REP. JOYCE PEPPIN ANNOUNCES 2009 LEGISLATIVE SURVEY RESULTS

St. Paul -- Representative Joyce Peppin (R – Rogers) recently announced her 2009 Legislative Survey Results. “I take very seriously the responsibility my constituents have provided me to be their voice in St. Paul,” said Peppin. “I was pleased by the number of survey responses I received, as well as the written comments made by many respondents.” The results are as follows:

1. In your opinion, what should state government do to improve the economy?
16% Fund construction and infrastructure jobs through state borrowing
39% Reduce business taxes to stimulate job creation
16% Invest in a well educated workforce by increasing spending for K-12 and higher education
45% Reduce income taxes to help families meet rising costs for housing, groceries and basic needs
11% None of the above -- don’t interfere with the private market

Rep. Peppin’s thoughts: During this time of economic uncertainty the Legislature should work to keep taxes low and encourage small business job creators to invest in Minnesota. The goal of the Legislature should be to keep the jobs we already have and encourage more companies to locate to our state to create new jobs.

2. Would you support a proposal to allow video slot machines in bars, and use the projected $750 million in annual revenue to help balance the state budget?
65% Yes
35% No

Rep. Peppin’s thoughts: There have been legislative proposals to allow slot machines in bars. It is helpful to see how people in the northwest suburbs feel about this revenue-raising option..

3. Would you support a proposal to allow video slot machines at the Minneapolis - St. Paul
International Airport and use the revenue generated to help balance the budget?
68% Yes
30% No

Rep. Peppin’s thoughts: This proposal has bi-partisan legislative support and may receive additional consideration before the legislature adjourns in mid May.

4. Should Minnesota have a law requiring voters to show photo identification prior to voting?
87% Yes
12% No

Rep. Peppin’s thoughts: I support common-sense efforts requiring photo identification to vote. This proposal continues to have strong support from Democrats, Republicans and Independents, and deserves to become law.

5. Do you support the proposal for Minnesota’s public colleges and universities to save money and implement more technology by offering 25 percent of their classes online (accessible by computer) by 2015?
51% Yes
13% No
35% Undecided/Need More Information

Rep. Peppin’s thoughts: This is an initiative of Governor Pawlenty meant to both respond to the changing climate in which students now learn and to gradually transition away from heavy reliance on “bricks and mortar” campuses which are extremely expensive to operate.

6. Do you support, and would you be willing to pay increased property taxes for:
(Maple Grove/Dayton residents) The proposed Bottineau Boulevard (Highway 81) express bus or light rail line?
21% Yes
79% No

(Rogers/Hassan/Corcoran/Greenfield/Hanover residents) An express bus route along I-94 from Rogers to downtown Minneapolis?
33% Yes
67% No

Rep. Peppin’s thoughts: Both proposals are being considered by the Met Council, the metro-wide planning body charged with overseeing transportation and transit planning and funding.

7. Please rate the following legislative concerns from most to least important
(1=most important, 7=least important)
33% Taxes
2% Environment
14% Balancing the state budget
7% Education
1% Transportation
9% Health Care
33% Economy/Job Creation
2% Other ________________

Rep. Peppin’s thoughts: The survey results clearly show people are most concerned about fiscal issues, including keeping taxes reasonable and encouraging job creation. This will continue to be my primary focus as your State Representative.

“Thank you to everyone who responded to my 2009 Legislative Survey. I appreciate hearing your thoughts and opinions the variety of legislative issues before me this session.” Peppin stated. “Feel free to contact me at any time. Additionally, I am happy to meet with any of my constituents in my office or at a location near you.”
