By Joyce Peppin
State Representative
On January 5 I had the honor and privilege of being sworn into office of the Minnesota House of Representatives for a third term. Each time I’ve participated in the swearing in ceremony it has been an awe-inspiring and humbling experience, and this year was no exception. Thank you for allowing me to serve as your voice at the State Capitol.
We will be facing a number of challenges in the legislature this year, but the largest issue will be balancing the budget when we have a $5 plus billion budget deficit. However, the budget balancing exercise presents opportunities to institute real reforms and bring cost savings and efficiencies to state government that have not been used before.
The budgeting process really starts in committees. This year I was appointed to four committees by the Speaker of the House. These committees are: Bioscience and Workforce Development Policy and Oversight Division; Finance; Health Care and Human Services Finance Division; and State Government Finance Division for which I am the Republican Lead.
In addition to serving on these committees I was also elected to be an Assistant Minority Whip for the Minority Caucus. This will help me to bring the concerns of our area to the leadership of the House, move key legislation, and more.
If you have ideas for balancing the state budget or for cost savings initiatives and efficiencies, please email me your thoughts. I would also like to encourage you to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have on any legislative issue.
